# Claude Code

> Connect your MCPCore server to Claude Code with one command or a project .mcp.json file.

Claude Code supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP natively, so no proxy or `npx` command is needed.

## Prerequisites

* [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) installed
* A MCPCore server with at least one tool

***

## Quick install

On the server's **Integration** tab, select **Claude Code** and copy the command from **Quick install**:

**Public**

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp
```

**Unlisted**

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp/<secret-key>
```

**API Key**

```bash theme={null}
export MCPCORE_API_KEY="<your-api-key>"
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer $MCPCORE_API_KEY"
```

The command reads the key from the `MCPCORE_API_KEY` variable of your shell. Turn on **Include my API key** to get the command with the key filled in.

**OAuth 2.0**

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http my-server https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp
```

Then run `/mcp` inside Claude Code and choose the server to sign in.

By default `claude mcp add` adds the server for you in the current project. Add `--scope user` to use it in every project, or `--scope project` to save it in the project's `.mcp.json` so your team gets it too.

## Manual setup

Add the server to `.mcp.json` in your project root. The **Manual setup** snippet on the Integration tab looks like this:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "my-server": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

For API Key mode:

```json theme={null}
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "my-server": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://my-server.mcpcore.io/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${MCPCORE_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}
```

The snippet on the Integration tab contains your real key. Before you commit `.mcp.json`, replace the key with `${MCPCORE_API_KEY}` as shown above: `.mcp.json` supports environment variables, so the key stays out of version control.

***

## Verify

Run:

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp list
```

Your server should be listed as connected. Inside Claude Code, `/mcp` shows the server and its tools. Ask Claude to use one of your tools to confirm it works.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem | Solution |
| - | - |
| Server shows as failed | Check the URL and that the server is active |
| `401 Unauthorized` | Check that `MCPCORE_API_KEY` is set in the shell you started Claude Code from |
| Tools missing | Make sure the tools are active and published. Drafts are not served |
| Tool calls fail | Check [Traffic Logs](https://docs.mcpcore.io/observability/traffic-logs.md) |
